2025 was Sowing Opportunities’ most engaged year ever! Since we began in 2022 providing greenhouse agriculture in the remote, indigenous highlands of Eastern Alta Verapaz, we have added one village each year. Now we are now working with four villages!
And this year, we also added two schools! Working with schools allows us to reach more families, as the students teach their parents what they’ve learned. They are not only learning a trade. They also have regular school lunches.
In 2026, we are planning to add four additional schools, to increase the number of families served in the region.
Since 2022, Sowing Opportunities has been collaboratively building agricultural capacity, resources, leadership, and economic development for indigenous families in villages in this area which has no resources, tourism or any other NGO. In 2024, we are working with the three villages of Chajmaic, Salaguna, and Sisbilhá, over 100 families – approximately 500 people.

Sowing Opportunities Innovative Solutions Campaign, which started in 2022, has mapped out a 3-Phase plan to create Sustainability, and help reduce Poverty and Malnutrition in the Eastern Highlands of Guatemala.
We are beginning with a third village in January 2024.
On Earth Day, we celebrate our youngest farmers – the students in the public primary schools in Northeast Alta Verapaz, Guatemala – and what they have gained by studying greenhouse curriculum at school: Two students at Escuela Flavio Gutiérrez (Fray Bartolomé) shared their stories about how they feel about what they’re learning. In January 2026, Sowing Opportunities’ agricultural work in the six public primary schools began. Our team has already made two trips to the region – in early February and in early March.
