Mother’s Day 2025

Mother’s Day in remote Eastern Alta Verapaz, Guatemala is unlike celebrations in the cities.  There are no flowers or special dinners.  In fact, the day is not recognized at all.

We at Sowing Opportunities recognize the women who lead the greenhouse projects for their homes with deep respect and appreciation for their hard work, dedication and developing expertise.

For example, Magdalena Paiz, mother of three, who has enough to feed her family of five and sells her excess vegetables to have additional income:

In addition, Ana Ché Putul, in Salaguna,

who proudly teaches her daughter, Ilda Guiselda Choc Ché, age 10, what she has learned from Sowing Opportunities of how to work in the greenhouse:

Emma Vicenta Ical Pop, a single mother of three minor children, finds the greenhouse that she learned how to cultivate to be a lifeline for her and her children.  Here she is with two of them and Sowing Opportunities’ project manager:

And, Aurelia Choc, mother of five whose husband left to try to make the journey north to provide for their family, felt despondent until her neighbor,

Dominga Ché Yaxcal, a midwife in the remote village of Sisbilhá, gathered other women to help her build the greenhouse.

Now, Aurelia has food to feed her young children.

Your donations create a lifesaving gift for the mothers in Eastern Alta Verapaz who, from nothing, now have sufficient food to feed their families and an income.
