How the greenhouses are constructed in the school

Students of the Fray Bartolomé de las Casas School in Alta Verapaz, Guatemala shovel soil into buckets with Sowing Opportunities’ project manager

In order to build the greenhouses…

After clearing the land for the greenhouses, all students participate in a six-step process:

1.Holes are dug deeply so that the poles can be placed securely.

2. The greenhouse frame is mounted.

3.Then, the greenhouse itself is constructed.

4.The sides are put up.

5.Students bring soil down from surrounding mountains and put it into a pile.

6.It is then shoveled into buckets to fill the greenhouse table for their school’s grade.

7.Once the sides are up, the greenhouse is filled with the soil.

It is through donations that students and their families in an extremely remote part of Guatemala are able to learn how to grow their own food, receive the resources to make this happen, and have food security for the first time in their lives.

From “just getting by” with no resources provided, to now having the support of Sowing Opportunities, this is a miracle happening before their eyes.

The process is summarized in this video:
