Because of the rocky soil in the region, vegetables cannot be grown directly in the ground. For this reason, corn – which is a Guatemalan food staple – doesn’t do well when grown on the land. So, Sowing Opportunities’ agricultural engineer came up with the plan to grow leafy greens and other crops in greenhouses. And, corn is grown in black plastic bags:

The soil for the corn comes from the mountain, carried down in buckets by the students and their teachers, as for the greenhouses. This allows for a fertile environment in which to cultivate vegetables.
Here you can see the corn grown for all grades 4-6 (the first-year pilot project) at Fray Bartolomé de las Casas School:

In our first greenhouse project in 2022, in the remote village of Chajmaic, we witnessed the corn growing tall and developing vegetables within a short period of time:

The growth is anticipated to be even more so with the Fray School because of the extra attention that the students and their teachers pay to the cultivation.
You are with us in all of these successes, and we are grateful for your assistance.
