We at Sowing Opportunities are really excited for 2026. We have two exciting upcoming events happening in February!
First, on February 10, our project manager is traveling to the U.S. and will give a talk on February 15 at Harvard-Epworth United Methodist Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This is an incredibly exciting moment, especially given the current political climate. If you’re local, please join us!

In 2026, Sowing Opportunities plans to expand to four additional public primary schools in the region of Eastern Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, to include agriculture as part of their curriculum.
We recognized that we can reach more families by teaching the students a trade to share with their parents.
Our team is traveling to the region on February 1 to begin working with the new schools in the region.

- Mixed rural school of Salaguna village (93 students)
- San Benito Calle II mixed rural school (240 students)
- Chahal mixed rural school (587 students)
- Caserío Guadalupe mixed rural school (59 students)
The criteria for selecting these four was:
- Interest shown during the visit of the Sowing Opportunities technical team in November 2025.
- Due to its geographical location, it serves as a demonstration site for the community.
- The socioeconomic levels of the student population reflect the needs of the community.
in addition to working with the four former villages, which experienced a 30% increase in population from 2024:
- The Village of Chajmaic (population 4,550)
- The Hamlet of Salaguna (population 3,120)
- The Hamlet of Sisbilhá (population 3,120)
- La Nueva Libertad, a division of Sisbilhá (population 1,950)
and the two current schools:
- Sisbilhá Public Primary School (57 students)
- Fray Bartolomé de las Casas Regional Public Primary School, which is called Mixed rural school Flavio Gutiérrez (350 students)

This venture requires additional funds for several reasons:
First, we are using more resources to bring supplies and secondly, our team is traveling more frequently to the region – up to eight times during the year: February, March, April, June, August, October, November.
Importantly, the U.S. government has begun issuing tariffs on foreign transfer fees to Guatemala.
We continue to ask for your support as we expand incrementally, and to also ask for your prayers that we’ll be able to continue to increase our funds to pay for Sowing Opportunities’ energetic plans for the coming year.
If you can do this, we are especially grateful for monthly and Donor Advised Funds (DAF) donations, in any amount. As always, 100% of your donations goes directly to Guatemala and our projects.

Thank you so much,
Fern and the Sowing Opportunities team
