Sowing Opportunities was busier than ever this summer, serving six schools in addition to four villages. Harvests have been bountiful despite challenges the students and families face. We wanted to share two success stories with you.
Huge strides at Nueva Guadalupe Hamlet School
One school especially in need of our help is the Guadalupe School. Most of the students’ families are unemployed, and the school is located in a very remote hamlet, with high levels of food insecurity and no opportunities or resources nearby.
There, our greenhouse project has had a significant impact: Unlike in the past, the students now have regular school lunches, which sometimes is their only meal of the day.
They also have the opportunity to expand their horizons by learning agricultural skills that not only bring immediate results, but offer a path to a future livelihood. Their mindset has changed from one of being resigned to poverty to one of hope for their futures.
What’s happening with Mileidy Yuliz Caal Chub?:
You may recall from previous emails that Mileidy, a fifth grader, of 12 years old, at the Guadalupe school, asked for help starting a greenhouse at home to help alleviate her family’s desperate circumstances. Abandoned by her father and mistreated by her mother, Mileidy lives with her grandmother and sister.
Today, from the sale of produce from her greenhouse beds, Mileidy has already purchased 20 chickens and two turkeys to supplement the vegetables that she provides to her family.
This has made a tremendous difference in the quality of life for her, her grandmother, and her younger sister. And her entrepreneurial spirit, fostered by her teacher, has helped her develop self-confidence and enabled her to study, free from worry over hunger.
It is thanks to your donations that this miracle has been able to take place. We have had sufficient funds for this student’s independent greenhouse at her home, and are able to continue to supply it.
