Saving lives during El Niño

September 26, 2026

In Guatemala, a convergence of climate change and politics is causing severe hunger, making Sowing Opportunities’ greenhouse project especially vital.

The El Niño weather pattern is especially strong this year. The “super” El Niño warming sea surface temperatures in the Eastern Pacific is causing severe drought and flooding in the Americas, resulting in crop failures and significantly increasing prices of food, fuel, and fertilizer. In Guatemala, El Niño is expected to last through February or March 2027, with peak intensity projected between November 2026 and January 2027.

The Guatemalan government has an emergency plan to provide food assistance to over 1.2 million families through December, and it authorized duty-free imports to prevent price gouging and supply shortages.

But internal government strife may undercut this plan.

Meanwhile, our project is literally saving lives. In four remote indigenous villages and six public primary schools, people are learning how to produce food with very little water.

In the School of the Hamlet of New Guadalupe — where unemployment is high — Sowing Opportunities’ greenhouses are providing sufficient food for students to have a hot lunch every day.

Join us to see for yourself! You can witness the work of the greenhouses in person. Sowing Opportunities is holding the first ever tour of the region we serve with Jaguar Tours from March 30 through April 5, 2027. Details coming in the next email!

It is thanks to your donations that this work continues, enabling us to send our team eight times per year to ensure that the greenhouses are yielding well and have sufficient supplies.
