One of the hallmarks of the work of Sowing Opportunities’ agricultural engineer is his ability to work with populations to teach them how to grow their plants beautifully in greenhouses in a short amount of time, giving high yield with minimal soil and water.
Many times the people are incredulous that something amazing will come out of the soil – enough to feed their families and beyond. With the school, however, Sowing Opportunities’ reputation preceded our working with them. The School Principal, Miguel Ángel López, solicited our help to create greenhouse agriculture.
Remember that this is an extremely remote region of Guatemala, where few native Guatemalans have traveled. That is, they have no tourism or trade.
In our first year of providing the tools for agriculture, 2022, in the village of Chajmaic, we saw that even the agricultural engineer was surprised by how quickly the crops grew, and that they produced four harvests per year, rather than three.
Now, working with the schools, there are many more hands and the teachers are being trained, as well as the students, so the results are equally impressive.
Here, a teacher reinforces the training learned from the agricultural engineer with female 4th grade students. You can see the first crop (July) and the current one (August):
