Widows and the elderly cultivate their greenhouses in Eastern Alta Verapaz

Sowing Opportunities finished a strong year in 2025, with families in four villages and students in two schools in Eastern Alta Verapaz, Guatemala cultivating their greenhouses to provide nutritious meals where they had previously only experienced hunger and poverty.

Among the families in the villages are several widows and elderly who, thanks to the collaborative help of their neighbors, and Sowing Opportunities’ team in the region, were able to fully participate in growing vegetables to provide health for them and their families.

One of those is Felicita López, 80, a widow and currently lives alone in La Nueva Libertad, a division of Sisbilhá.

She is very grateful to Sowing Opportunities because her quality of food has improved significantly. She is happy to grow her own food because, she says, she never tires of it.

Another participant is María Laines, an elderly woman, in La Nueva Libertad, is very happy to be able to produce her own food. (In Latin America, a senior citizen means someone who is already older and has passed the age of 65.)
