PROJECT 2026 OFFICIALLY STARTED

February 11, 2026

In the words of Sowing Opportunities’ project manager, “With the help of God, our BELOVED, we are going all out to reach the goal of another year of excellence.”

On January 31, our team members traveled to the remote region of Eastern Alta Verapaz to begin our project for 2026, launching greenhouse agriculture programs in four new public primary schools. Within one week, they achieved the equivalent of moving mountains!

According to our manager, they were met with such great enthusiasm and so many questions that he rearranged his schedule to spend more time in each school. “The kids grab me and won’t let me out,” he says. “They want me to stay at their school helping them. And the teachers have so much I have to attend to.”

Supported by our team, the students are already hard at work. Schools with previous greenhouse tables in operation received 150 new seedlings of different types, customized to their requests to maximize yield.

Meanwhile, tables for our four new schools are under construction. To increase yield and conserve water in the summer heat, and in areas where access to water is nearly impossible, our agricultural engineer has introduced black tarps to cover the growing tables and roof coverings to protect the seedlings.

As an example of the progress, at the Rural Mixed School San Benito 2nd Street (photos below), students built the greenhouses with the help of their teachers and our agricultural engineer and received the black tarps.

In March, we will deliver more seedlings, already treated with fertilizers and insecticides, to the tables under construction,” our project manager says. “We are now working to figure out how we can get access to water to the schools most in need during the summer.”

Your donations are what make this possible.  We are grateful for all of them, whatever you can donate.
