An emerging, severe El Niño threatens to push an estimated 3 million people in Guatemala – approximately 16 percent of the population – into acute food insecurity.
Official forecasts predict a pronounced dry spell and a significant, protracted water deficit from May 2026 onwards. This is due to a significantly lengthened canícula (the mid-summer dry spell), resulting in severe drought in 45% of the country, affecting agriculture and food source for the entire country. *
In the face of this harsh current reality, our project and our mission gain even greater strength.
Sowing Opportunities teaches how to produce without the need for much soil, space, or large quantities of water.
We teach the future within a present that is completely fractured.

Take a look at the video video of praise and appreciation that our project manager, Ricardo, and the executive director, Fern, recently produced:
Your donation allows the people in four villages and six public primary schools across Northeast Alta Verapaz, Guatemala to have food security.
