A story about how a life has been transformed

Jeremías García Coy lives with his wife, Marta Molina Choc, in the hamlet of Salaguna, Guatemala.  Jeremías, having worked outside the village since he was 12 years old, learned Spanish through his work; school was not offered when he was a young boy.  Jeremías and Marta married when they were 21 and have an 11-year-old daughter.  They are one of the few families that speak Spanish in the community.

Jeremías, an electrician, fell on hard times during the Covid-19 pandemic and his family’s economic situation never recovered.  The remote area where Salaguna is located is mostly out of the view of the government.  The region receives no resources, such as paved roads and stable internet, and especially not the critical need of a source of water access.

Hence, when Sowing Opportunities brought training and resources for greenhouse agriculture, Jeremías was moved – so much so that he felt the need to tell our team when we visited two months after the project had begun:

He said, “I’m not just thanking you for the greenhouses.  You give us more than we can see.  You’re giving us respect, when no one else has.  We’re forgotten by the world.”

His words continue to inspire and motivate our team as we work to find solutions to provide hope and capability for Salaguna, as well as the other two villages where we work – Chajmaic and Sisbilhá.
